But some netizens have come out in droves to defend the Philippines' participation in the pageant:

Aside from top title Miss World Philippines 2017, Reina Hispanoamericana Filipinas 2017 title will be given at the end of the crowning event on September 3 and the winner will fly to Santa Cruz, Bolivia in November 2017 for Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 pageant.

According to Wikipedia, the pageant began in 1991 as Reina Sudamericana (South American Queen) in Bolivia and was participated by 10 countries which are restricted from South America until 2003. The first winner of the pageant was Patricia Godói of Brazil.

In 2004 participants from Panama and Costa Rica in Central America were invited; and in 2006 beauties from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and  Spain joined. By 2007, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and the  United States were added, the pageant changed its name to "Reina Hispanoamericana".

In 2008, Carribean Islands Curaçao and Haiti were added in the pageant. And year 2017 will once again be historic in Philippine pageantry as it will mark the country's participation in the pageant.

The Philippines is the only Hispanic country in Asia. The country was also colonized by Spain, and besides some Spanish words, the Philippines retains a lot of the other Spanish cultural influences including cuisines, dances, Catholicism/ Christianity religion and other traditions that mixed with indigenous cultures.

Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 will be the 27th edition and Maria Camila Soleibe of Colombia will crown her successor at the end of the event.
