Half-Filipina Music Teacher Crowned Miss Universe NEW ZEALAND 2016

23-year-old music and drama teacher Tania Dawson is Miss Universe New Zealand 2016 in a beauty event held at Sky City Theatre on September 3, 2016. She was crowned by the outgoing Miss New Zealand 2015 Samantha McClung.

The 5'5" beauty who wins a brand new car  edged other 19 contestants and will represent  the  "Land of the Long White Cloud" in the forthcoming Miss Universe 2016 which will be held in the Philippines.

Dawson, who is part-Filipino, said her background played a big role in taking part. "My mother spent years encouraging me to enter (the pageant). In the Philippines, pageants are regarded as a family honour and there is a huge amount of respect for them. I thought I'd give it a go and next thing you know, I was enjoying them."

In the same event Seresa Lapaz who is also part Filipina was emerged as first runner up and second runner up position goes to Larissa Allen.

New Zealand has one Miss Universe crown through Lorraine Downes in 1983.  New Zealand haven’t landed at the semis of Miss Universe since 1992.
