Miss Earth 2016 Might be Held in President Duterte's Hometown

2016 Miss Earth might be held in Davao City in October 15th. Wanda Teo, Department of Tourism chief is endorsing to hold the "beauty for a cause" pageant for the first time in Mindanao, specifically in Davao City.

Teo, who is a former Bb. Pilipinas contestant together with Tourism Undersecretary Kat De Castro talked about the plan with Miss Earth Chairperson Lorraine Schuck, reigning Miss Earth Angelia Ong, and Miss Philippines Earth 2016 Imelda Schweighart last  Wednesday at Department of Tourism office.

Miss Earth founder Lorraine Schuck, reigning Miss Earth Angelia Ong, Toursim Undersecretary Kat de Castro, DOT chief Wanda Teo, and Miss Philippines Earth 2016 Imelda Schweighart.

If plans push through, chances are that the organization will move  away from swimsuit competition as Davao City's law  implements  a “no swimsuit” policy for beauty contests in the hometown of the newly elected President Rodrigo Duterte.

Davao is home to highest mountain in the Philippines,  Mount Apo. Davao is also known as the "Durian Capital" of the Philippines. The Philippine eagle, the country's national bird and considered the largest eagle in the world, is endemic also in Davao. According to Secretary Teo, Hosting the third biggest international pageant promoting eco-tourism and environmental protection will provide growth in country's foreign tourist arrivals to 10 million this year.

Last year,  the 15th Miss Earth pageant was held  at Marx Halle in Vienna, Austria. It was the first time the pageant was held in Europe and outside of Asia. It was also the first back to back victories in Miss Earth history: Angelia Ong of the Philippines crowned by her compatriot Jamie Herrell.
